Earth Dreamers is a teaching resource for Year 7-8 in English medium that focuses on unpacking the new social sciences learning area.
The four suggested inquiry pathways for robust learning reflect the richness and complexities of the climate crisis, regeneration and sustainability.
Inquiry one explores different worldviews and orientations to nature and how the dominant values that underpin these relationships also underpin the crisis.
Inquiry two explores connections between advertising, consumerism, planetary limits, economic models and wellbeing.
Inquiry three centres on environmental activism and social justice in the Pacific.
Inquiry Four focuses on food, culture, connection, systems of production and kai resilience.
It was informed by an amazing group of thought leaders – Pounamu Skelton Tumu Whakarae of Hua Parakore for Te Waka Kai Ora, Chris Eames , Associate Professor in Environmental and Science Education Research Centre at University of Waikato, Aigagalefili Fepulea’i – Tapua’i Pacific climate activist and Laura Kearney, then outreach manager from the New Zealand Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Centre. The brilliant Deb Lean from Akaroa Area School provided teacher voice, Basil Keane gifted the mihi whakatau, Simon Chiaroni did the sharp edit, Rachel Bolstad reviewed it and Gavin Mouldey, did the stunning illustrations.
